Let's be honest. Scams do exist. ICOs that have no real development plan or their founders increasing the value of their crypto or token just to sell them en masse behind are legion in the cryptocurrency world. There are also attempts at direct scams by ill-intentioned people. This is also the case with NFTs, where successful artists see their collection copied and distorted by dozens of collections that want to ride its wave. But that doesn't mean you can't spot these scams. First of all, what is a scam? Crypto-currency scams are a type of investment fraud that can take many forms, from phishing to the sudden disappearance of funds. As crypto-currency blockchain technology is not regulated by a central authority such as a bank, bad actors can easily take advantage of the hope around investments. There are the dream salesmen, those who promise a crazy investment in their business or project that is in fact nothing more than a Ponzi scheme, or websites that fool you with an incredible but impossible return on investment. Glossary of the crypto world : [ A ] Wallet address The address where crypto-currencies can be stored, sent and received. Address - Address delegation Delegation of one's crypto from a wallet to a validator node. Airdrop A way of promoting crypto-currencies by sending a few free tokens to the community in exchange for generally small and simple actions. Algorithm An algorithm is a set of rules to follow to solve a problem or perform a task. Algorithm - Algorithmic stablecoin Algorithmic stablecoins are tokens linked to a fiat currency, usually the US dollar, solely through software and specific conditions. ATH - All-Time-High The highest point (in terms of price, market capitalisation) a crypto-currency has reached in its history. ATL - All-Time-Low The lowest point (in terms of price, market capitalisation) reached by a crypto-currency in its history. Altcoin An alternative currency to Bitcoin. AMA - Ask me anything The term "Ask me anything" refers to actions where people from a crypto project or company in the crypto world organise a session with the aim of users asking them any questions they want. API - Application Programming Interface This is software that acts as an intermediary or bridge allowing two applications to communicate with each other. It is what allows applications, data and devices to interact. Arbitrage A strategy whereby investors buy a currency on one market and sell it at a higher price on another market in order to make a profit. ASIC - Application Specific Integrated Circuit Refers to specialised computers that are designed to perform a very specific task (for example, calculating the hashes for the Bitcoin proof of work). ASIC - ASIC Resistant A term used to describe crypto-currency proof-of-work protocols that are resistant to application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), by incorporating various parameters that prevent ASICs from having a competitive advantage over conventional hardware. Dusting attack A new form of malicious activity in which hackers and scammers attempt to invade the privacy of crypto-currency users by sending small amounts of money into their wallets. Replay attack A replay attack is a form of network attack in which the transmission of valid data is fraudulently intercepted, then delayed or resent to trick the recipient into doing what the hacker wants. [ B ] Bearish Term used to indicate negative sentiment towards the market or an asset, when investors believe there will be a downward price movement. Bearish - Bear market As opposed to bullish, this term indicates the direction of the market towards a downward trend. Bullish A term used to indicate positive sentiment towards the market or an asset, when investors believe there will be an upward price movement. Bullish - Bull market A bullish market indicates the direction of the market towards an upward trend. Bitcoin - Bitcoin evangelist People who are passionate about bitcoin and dedicated to spreading knowledge about bitcoin. Blockchain In the context of blockchain, block refers to the collection of data or transactional information that is aggregated into a predetermined size. In the case of bitcoin, the blockchain describes its decentralised public register containing transactional information. Block - Block confirmation Refers to the number of confirmations of a particular block. Each block preceding the referenced block adds a block confirmation to it. Block explorer Application or website that displays information such as the status of transactions or data contained in a block in a given public blockchain network. [ More in the relevant module... ]
